In addition, we hope that the insights from this survey will help you to overcome any lifestyle challenges that may be hindering you from achieving your maximum potential.

What Can Be Learned In Just 3 Minutes?

While the Real Life Management 3-Minute Survey is easy to both administer and take, the insight gained in the Summary Report reveals the true sophistication of this tool. It shows how a person instinctively approaches life, what matters most to them in terms of priorities, the perspective from which they see and relate to the world, and the ultimate aim of their efforts.

The 3-Minute Survey addresses the Attitude Component of the Real Life Management ABC Model. This model is described in the Member Area of the website as well as in the Real Life Management trade book. The 3-Minute Survey contains four lists of ten words each. The respondent selects the words which they feel most describe themselves. The total number of words selected in each column is calculated and checked, not allowing for any column total scores to be tied. Because this produces a large number of four-number pattern combinations, we have chosen to simplify our survey by addressing each column as a separate letter. The numeric scores are sequenced in the order of greatest to least and translated into letters which stand for one of four categories listed below.

    • T = Tactical: T's emphasize structure, organization, planning, security and attention to detail. Their key motivational question is How?

    • R = Rational: R's emphasize the "big picture," data analysis, value, quality and the bottom line. Their key motivational question is Why?

    • I = Independent/Impulsive: I's emphasize action, fun, adventure, risk, attention and immediate results. Their key motivational question is When?

    • M = Mellow/Ministry: M's emphasize peace, conversation, harmony, relationships, helping and caring for people. Their key motivational question is Who?

The survey scores reveal a four-letter pattern (e.g. TRIM, MRIT, IRMT, etc. with no duplicate letters allowed). The first letter in the pattern represents the priority that most affects behavior. The other letters affect behavior to a lesser degree depending upon the actual numeric scores. Disclaimer: We use the word "behavior" in a very broad sense and not in the traditional psychological or personality profile sense. We are simply seeking to gain insight into core attitude and communication styles.

The 3-Minute Survey produces a pattern of four letters, "T," "R," "I," or "M," in some combination. This pattern reveals the order of what is important to you in terms of priority, how you most naturally communicate (give and receive information), and provides insight into how you make decisions in your life. The first letter is the most determinative of your approach to life and the area in which you are naturally gifted. The next two letters have a modifying influence on the first, and the last letter indicates what tends to give you stress and cause you to resist, push back or even shut down. The last letter also indicates the area in which you tend to be less gifted and where you are most likely to struggle.

The various combinations of the letters and the relative numerical scores have significance in predicting how you will tend to "do" life. These combinations are further described using the metaphor of three different kinds of boats.

    Maneuvering Life's Three Boats

    Barges, Tugboats and Sailboats

Let's continue interpretation of the survey and take into account the combination of the first two letters in the pattern. This will help you begin to make the connection between your wiring and your approach to choices about money, food, relationships and other lifestyle management issues.

The four letters are divided into two categories. T and R represent "head" letters. In other words, people who lead with a T or an R tend to approach life through logic and reason based on hard facts. M and I represent "heart" letters. In other words, people who lead with an I or an M tend to approach life through intuition, experience, relationships, and how they feel.

Taking the first two letters of your pattern, we assign you a metaphorical "boat" from one of three categories:

    • Barges: The first two letters must consist of two head letters, T or R (TR or RT). We describe this person as a "barge" or "big ship" meaning that they tend to pursue a focused agenda or plan, often with little concern for how it "feels" or its impact on other people.

    • Tugboats: The first two letters must consist of the two heart letters, I or M (IM or MI). We describe this person as a "tugboat," meaning that they tend to push or pull on people through a dynamic appeal to emotion, or a call for immediate action.

    • Sailboats: The first two letters may be a combination of one head letter and one heart letter (TI, IT, TM, MT, RM, MR, RI, or IR). We describe this person as a "sailboat," meaning that they tend to maneuver between leading with their head or leading with their heart, depending on the situation.

As humans, we are complex and during stressful situations we can actually morph from our initial boat (first two letters) to our second boat (second and third letters). Some people can do this with more ease than others.

Each of these patterns (barges, tugboats, and sailboats) is incredibly valuable and tremendously useful to the world. At the same time, these patterns can indicate a propensity to struggle with specific lifestyle management choices. We will refer to those problems as leaks in your boat.

    Your Boat in Smooth Waters

Watch Out for the Leaks in Your Boat!

There is a direct correlation between the first two letters of your pattern and your response to lifestyle issues:

    • Barges: Tend to be at lower risk for money and weight problems, and at higher risk for relational problems. They are more likely to hoard money, control relationships, and are less open to new ideas. When looking for solutions to issues on health and money, they pick and choose from diets or money solutions according to what makes sense to them, and then create their own plan.

    • Tugboats: Tend to be at higher risk in almost all areas of lifestyle management. They struggle the most with obesity, financial management, and setting boundaries with relationships. They look for the easy, quick-fix solution to lifestyle choices, and therefore often get suckered by fast-food offers, fad diets, credit card "deals," get-rich-quick schemes and short-term unhealthy personal or business relationships.

    • Sailboats: Tend to make the most balanced decisions about money, weight, health, and relationships. They have an advantage in keeping these lifestyle choices in their proper perspective because they make decisions with both their head and their heart. If they lead with a heart letter (I or M) they can sometimes let their guard down, depending on the emotions influencing them in that moment. If they lead with a head letter (T or R) they may come across as demanding and overbearing depending on the circumstances influencing them in that moment.

    Your Boat in Rough Waters

    It Has Stressors and Sinkers

There is a direct correlation between various patterns that cause stress on your boat. Increased pressure for certain patterns may even threaten to sink your boat.

Simply put, if the first 2 letters in someone else's pattern are the last 2 letters in yours, that person will tend to become a stressor to you. Remember this works both ways; you will tend to be a stressor to them as well.

This stress is magnified if all 4 letters in someone else's pattern are in the exact reverse order of your 4 letters. That person will tend to become a serious stressor and may even sink your boat. Remember this works both ways; you will tend to a sink them as well. Life really is like a harbor full of different kinds of vessels. Each watercraft has unique needs and special purposes but must operate together in the shared space of a busy port.

    Your Attitude & Balance

A Matter of Priority and Intensity

In the language of Real Life Management and the 3-Minute Survey, a person's balance is the priority between their head and heart in regard to their daily beliefs, attitudes and choices. Approximately 30% of people in the United States lead with their head in beliefs and choices and approximately 30% lead with their heart in these same areas, leaving 40% who have a combination of both.

In this report you have become familiar with terms like Barge, Tugboat, and Sailboat. You have learned that two head letters in combination is a Barge, two heart letters in combination is a Tugboat and any mixed combination of the two is a Sailboat. Please refer to the Real Life Management resources for a more complete explanation of the RLM Boats.

The fact that you lead with your head (TR or RT), which we call a Barge, or your heart (IM or MI), which we call a Tugboat, does not mean that you are a dysfunctional person. It simply means that your priority in life is different from others, which does not make your way the "right" or "wrong" way, and it certainly does not make it the "only" way.

T R letters are Barge (head) letters and I M letters are Tugboat (heart) letters.

If the first two letters of your survey results or score were both head letters (T R) or (R T), you are a head person and a Barge. Barges tend to struggle with maneuvering waters because of their straight-ahead, one-speed, focused and task-oriented approach to life.

If the first two letters were both heart letters (M I) or (I M), you are a heart person and a Tugboat. Tugboats tend to push and pull on others' boats, which give them the life long struggle with the inflexible Barges and the ever changing movements of the Sailboat.

If the first two letters of your survey score are a combination of head and heart letters (I T), (T I), (I R), (R I), (M T), (T M), (M R) or (R M), you are a combination of head/heart or heart/head, which we call a Sailboat. Sailboats tend to have the best balance because they sail through life adjusting to the winds, storms, or other boats in life. In fact, they tend to be able to avoid most serious confrontations with Barges or Tugboats.

You can determine your balance by adding your head letter scores together and adding the scores of your heart letters together. The difference in the score of head letters (T plus R) and heart letters (I plus M), should be 7 or less. If the difference is greater than 7, it will be important for you to use this report to assist you in balancing your relationships and daily choices. This difference in your combined head/heart score is a major key in understanding the concept of Attitude Balance and Intensity. This is a solid indicator of where and how much you will struggle when making crucial life and business choices with either too much logic, too many facts, too many questions OR too much compassion, too much optimism, too much risk, and too much impatience. We encourage and refer you to the book entitled Real Life Management as well as the downloadable resources available through the member area of the website for deeper study on this issue.

Barges and Tugboats will struggle the most with balance due to the fact that they are naturally out of balance. Sailboats have a head/heart difference over 9. If this were the case, they wouldn't be a Sailboat. For example, a Sailboat with the scores T=10 R=8 I=9 M=0 would have a difference between 18 on head and 9 on heart (a difference of 9). Although Sailboats tend to be naturally more balanced than the other two boats (because they utilize both head and heart attitudes in making a decision), a Sailboat that has a head/heart difference of 5 or more, like the example noted above, is in danger of slipping out of balance. Thus, the natural balance of the Sailboat does not mean that they have no room for improvement; it simply demonstrates that they are quicker to adjust to Barge or Tugboat individuals in daily relationships and communications.

    Your Adaptability & Flexibility

A Matter of Give and Take

Let's consider your flexibility and adaptability. How flexible you are and how well you adapt to a situation depends on your score in each of the four columns. Example: the pattern TRIM (T-10, R-9, I-8, M-7). This is the pattern of a person who can adapt to situations or individuals when it is a priority for them. This person is a TR Barge with "heart" scores (I-8, M-7) and has a high possibility for flexibility when necessary, especially if the situation benefits them. We may gain this insight by observing the tightness or the fall off in the numerical scores.

By contrast, let's consider the same TR Barge with a lower "heart" scoring pattern (T-10, R-9, I-3, M-1). This person obviously is not going to have good flexibility and adaptability due to the wide range of scores. The middle letters (R-9 and I-3) have values with a spread >3 which indicates that this person can't adapt and be flexible in most situations or with other types of people even when they know it could be to their advantage.

If your scores result in a rapid falloff of >3, in the last letter, example: (T-10, R9, I-7, M-2), you are stressed and at times will struggle with flexibility and adapting in situations when your boat or life becomes overloaded with demands for you to operate or conform to the characteristics of that last letter.

If your scores vary between the numbers in each column by three or more, example: (T-10, R-7, I-4, M-1), you are struggling with flexibility and adapting in situations when your boat or life becomes overloaded with various demands on you which are outside of the giftedness you naturally display from your lead (first) letter.

The good news is that you can repair these holes in your boat by "ALTERing" your attitude and belief system in order to improve the relationship of the numbers and reduce the drop off in scores.

Even though many things in our life can be changed, your attitude and approach to life cannot. However, your attitudes can be ALTERed to improve your balance, adaptability and flexibility. This is only a start for you on your new journey to a more flexible lifestyle. The 310 page book entitled Real Life Management and the downloadable resources available through the member area of the website provide additional information on these issues.

    Leadership Sales & Service Model

Great Leaders are Servants and Students

Millions of dollars are spent annually by global corporations, government agencies, religious organizations and educational institutions on such topics as leadership, team building, best practice management, and sales and customer service programs. Differant organizations may use different words for sales or customer service, but we are all in leadership, sales, or service of one kind or another.

When most people are asked, Who's your #1 customer? they reply with a quick response referring to an end user, retail buyer, members of a congregation, or a student at a school. Sometimes it's a reply as simple as: Whoever buys or gives the most money. Although these are good answers to a point, they are not the real answer.

The real answer is YOU are the #1 customer and your job, first and foremost, is to understand your unique wiring/attitude in order for you to better partner, lead and serve those at home, work and in other all spheres of your life.

When you understand and learn to apply this concept each and every day you will maximize your giftedness (strengths & talents) AND maximize the giftedness (strengths & talents) of others around you. By doing this you may very well avoid setting yourself and others up to be misunderstood, underperform and outright fail in some important areas of life.

Leadership, sales, service, and team building start right at home with your family. With your real top customers being the ones with whom we spend the most time. It then carries to your friends and associates in daily life.

If you want to be a great leader, sell more, service better, impact your community and build a winning team, make sure you keep your focus on adding value by understanding and appreciating the unique giftedness of your family, friends, co-workers, employees and your employer. You must add value through understanding BEFORE you try to lead, sell or service anyone or anything. Then, seek to understand and appreciate the needs and gifts of your external customers, clients and constituents. In doing this, you will be more productive and more effective as you make the winning connection.

If you can learn to get your attitude out of the way, learn to serve others by meeting their attitude needs and communicating to them in ways that reduce stress from fear, anger and guilt, you will be well on your way to lifestyle transformation. Remember, in the real life world you lead by example, serve your customers, focus on the needs of your team and sell yourself as your # 1 product.
